Death*Alexander I Romanov Emperor and Autocrat of All the Russias died on 1 December 1825 in Taganrog, Rostov Region, Russia, at age 47.
Note*He stood against Napoleon refusing to sue for peace with the French army that had invaded Russia with a military force of 600,000 soldiers. Having fought Napoleon's army to a standstill at the Battle of Borodino on September 17, 1812 the Russians withdrew allowing the French to entered Moscow unchallenged. After a little, more than a month Napoleon's army was forced to retreat across the vast frozen lands of Russia. Cold, hungry and sick the scorched earth tactics implemented by Alexander's army began to take its toll on Napoleon's forces as they fled the frozen wasteland in the Russian winter all the while being harassed by the Russians. By March 1814, Russian troops were in Paris and Alexander played a vital role in negotiations to determine the restoration of France. He would also play a key role at the Congress of Vienna in which the boundaries of the European states were redrawn after the defeat of Napoleon.
