After a little, more than a month Napoleon's army was forced to retreat across the vast frozen lands of Russia. Cold, hungry and sick the scorched earth tactics implemented by Alexander's army began to take its toll on Napoleon's forces as they fled the frozen wasteland in the Russian winter all the while being harassed by the Russians. By March 1814, Russian troops were in Paris and Alexander played a vital role in negotiations to determine the restoration of France. He would also play a key role at the Congress of Vienna in which the boundaries of the European states were redrawn after the defeat of Napoleon. |
