By March 1814, Russian troops were in Paris and Alexander played a vital role in negotiations to determine the restoration of France. He would also play a key role at the Congress of Vienna in which the boundaries of the European states were redrawn after the defeat of Napoleon. |

Alexei was reported to have formed a life long friendship with Custer. In 1904 the Russo-Japanese war broke out and Alexei's Imperial Russian Navy was soundly defeated by the Japanese. Alexei's First Pacific Squadron led by Commander Wilgelm Vitgeft was defeated at the Battle of Port Arthur and the Second Pacific Squadron led by Admiral Zinovy Rozhestvensky was defeated by the Japanese at the Battle of Tsushima. Alexei was relieved of his command on 2 June, 1905. |
