While in the United States he participated in buffalo hunts in the Midwest accompanied by Chief Spotted Tail, Chief Two Lance and a contingent of the US Calvary. Among those escorting him from the US Calvary was General Philip Sheridan, General Edward Ord and Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Custer. Alexei was reported to have formed a life long friendship with Custer. In 1904 the Russo-Japanese war broke out and Alexei's Imperial Russian Navy was soundly defeated by the Japanese. Alexei's First Pacific Squadron led by Commander Wilgelm Vitgeft was defeated at the Battle of Port Arthur and the Second Pacific Squadron led by Admiral Zinovy Rozhestvensky was defeated by the Japanese at the Battle of Tsushima. Alexei was relieved of his command on 2 June, 1905. |
