They were driven from the Isle of Islay by the Vikings but later returned to reclaim their lands and also the lands of Morvern. Clan MacInnes was led by the mighty Somerled MacGillbride in the Battle of Morvern against the Viking after their clan chief was killed in battle. They fought ferociously and drove the Vikings from Morvern and most of the mainland of Scotland. During the Jacobite Rebellions the MacInnes fought on both sides however, the MacInnes of Morvern, Lochaber and Appin fought with the Stewarts of Appin for Bonnie Prince Charlie. Clan MacInnes is wrought with a history that is both legendary and tragic and there exists no clan chief to this day.

Note*He was a Celtic hero who was probably more Viking than Celt, however in the twelfth century he drove the Vikings from Western Scotland and became the most powerful Lord of the Isles. Although he is known to have a Norse mother he is believed to be descended from a royal Celtic line through his father. Threatened by the growing power and encroachment upon his territory by Malcolm IV King of Scotland, Somerled with an army of nearly 6000 Norse-Scottish-Irish and Manx warriors attacked Malcolm's forces in a preemptive strike near Renfrew Castle. Somerled was killed at the onset of the Battle of Renfrew and his forces quickly dispersed when he was slain by a traitor among his ranks.
