Charts | Kenneth MacAlpine, 1st King of Scotland |
Father* | Alpin MacEochaid King of Kintyre Scotland b. c 778, d. 20 Jul 834 |
Birth* | Kenneth I MacAlpine King of Scotland was born in 810 in Isle of Iona, Argyll, Scotland. |
He was the son of Alpin MacEochaid King of Kintyre Scotland. | |
Death* | Kenneth I MacAlpine King of Scotland died in 859 in Forteviot, Perthshire, Scotland; from cancer. |
Burial* | He was buried after 859 in Isle of Iona, Argyll, Scotland. |
Note* | He was the first king to unite the Picts of Pictavia, (native inhabitants of Scotland) and the Scots of Dalriada who came from Ireland. Because he united these two peoples under one king, he is often considered the first King of Scotland. His mother is believed to be a Pictish Princess and a descendant of the royal house of Fortrenn. Kenneth was a great warrior and powerful king who fended off the Viking invasions of Scotland. His descendants were kings of Scotland for over 200 years, the last king from the House of Alpine being Malcolm II Canmore. Malcolm II having no sons passed the crown to his daughter's son, Duncan I King of Scotland, who brought about the House of Dunkeld but was later killed by MacBeth. From the line of Kenneth MacAlpine arose 25 generations of Scottish kings and the MacAlpine Clan. Clan MacAlpine is a royal clan among the oldest clans from highlands of Scotland and the original clan seat of the MacAlpine's was in Dunstaffnage, Argyll Scotland. The history of the MacAlpine's is a deeply tragic one and there exists no clan chief at this time. Kenneth's father is said to have been beheaded by the Picts and the motto of Clan MacAlpine is "Cuinich bas Alpan" which means Remember the Death of Aplin. The history and rise to power of Kenneth MacAlpine remains shrouded in mystery but his descendants from the House of Aplin continue to flourish. |
