Legend states that when Fitz Hamon had succeeded in taking Glamorgan from Rhys, Prince of South Wales, eleven of the twelve knights had obtained grants of land for their services. However when Payne Turberville demanded his share of land Sir Robert replied "There are men and arms; go get it where you can". Payne taking the men at arms set his sights on Coity Castle demanding that Morgan the Welsh Lord of Coity surrender his castle and lands. Morgan however with his daughter's arm in one hand and a sword in another replied "If you marry my daughter and come to my castle like an honest man you may have it, if not let my arm and sword and those of yours decide who shall call the castle his own." Payne is said to have surrendered his sword to Morgan and married his daughter securing the castle and lordship of Coity. Payne with Morgan's assistance selected and retained two thousand of Morgan's best soldiers in his castle.
