Robert was forced to flee leaving his brooch (Famous Brooch of Lorn) in the dying hands of a MacDougall clansman who had attacked him as he fled. John and his clan would later be defeated by Robert the Bruce at the Battle of Brander in August 1308. He was eventually captured by Robert and his forces and died a prisoner at Dumbarton Castle.
